Oh boys…

Posted by Justin on March 10th, 2010 | No Comments

In what may be the most untimely and ironic song ever, Cheryl Cole’s last single featured a b-side entitled Boys, written by Adele – yes, that Adele (I would kill someone to hear her demo of this song!). I just find it funny that with the shit-storm that is Cheryl’s personal life currently, this song is basically about how boys are shit but girls can’t help liking (or loving) them. Even funnier that the rumors circle that Cheryl may give her dirtbag hubby another chance. It’s so Elin Nordegren of her, right? Wrong. Chezza, as she’s referred to in the UK press, needs to beat her husband down, Tiger Woods style.

And another frivolous note about this song is that I feel it LITERALLY sounds like Shania Twain or could have been plucked from her back catalogue. Or that Shania should sing this and Cheryl sing the ever-appropriate Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under?

Cheryl Cole – Boys

Cheryl’s new single Parachute is out next Monday, with a new b-side titled Just Let Me Go and remixes of the single by Ill Blu, Buzz Junkies and more. She’ll also be on Radio 1′s Live Lounge this Friday singing Parachute and presumably a cover version, a tradition of most acts who visit the program.

Adele working with Rick Rubin

Posted by Justin on February 16th, 2010 | No Comments

In a ‘What the WHAT!?’ of the day, it’s being reported that legendary rock producer Rick Rubin is helming the new Adele record. Her last album was my shit for a long time. I played the hell out of that album and it contains probably two of my favorite songs of all time, albeit one is a cover of the brilliant Bob Dylan tune To Make You Feel My Love, nearly covered by all but not as good as Adele.

Adele is holed away writing tracks with Florence and The Machine producer Paul Epworth, who spilled the beans on Rubin taking the lead on production.

I guess it’s not that big of a surprise for him to be working with Adele. Over his career, Rubin has been the original DJ for Beastie Boys, co-founded Def Jam Records, worked with Slayer, Linkin Park, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Metallica, Shakira, Dixie Chicks and Johnny Cash. Needless to say, it oughta be uh-mazing.

BBC Sounds of 2010

Posted by Justin on January 30th, 2010 | 1 Comment

Like Billboard magazine, the BBC – in all its conglomerate wisdom, basically had a short list of 15 artists they picked as the possible ‘Sound of 2010.’ Unlike Billboard, the BBC actually elects a true winner, an artist they deem to be the most buzzworthy, one with the highest potential as far as success and musical credibility and from their previous winners, you can see how they have been fairly spot on. Take it for what it’s worth – the poll is among music industry folk and journalists covering music.

2009: Little Boots, 2008: Adele, 2007: Mika, 2006: Corinne Bailey Rae, 2005: The Bravery.

The contenders for 2010:

and the winner…Ellie Goulding, whom bloggers have been creme-ing their jeans over for the last 6 months at least. Video clips, demos and remixes have created quite a lot of hype with her work with Starsmith and then her recent duet with Erik Hassle. Under the Sheets is honestly one of my favorite songs of last year (and probably will remain strong in 2010) and her latest single, Starry Eyed, has just premiered with its own video and the Russ Chimes remix is also spectacular.
