From the first notes of the intro on Kelis’ new album Flesh Tone, it is evident that this album is unlike any other that Kelis has released. Gone are the Neptunes, the hip-hop, the rapping. The tone is set that this effort will be more electronic and the vocals seem a little more raw and flawed. In the place of all that are tracks produced by David Guetta, DJ Ammo, Jean Baptiste, DJ Tocadisco and Diplo to name a few.

As the intro ends, Kelis lets us in on the secret that, “We Control the Dancefloor.” The next track, 22nd Century, is absolute techno dance. I didn’t listen to the version of this that leaked a while ago, but I’m digging it a lot. It’s quirky and breezy and catchy as hell. It’s less vocally abrasive than her lead single Acapella, which can be a bit shrill at times. The great part about this album too is that it’s one seamless mix. They all flow right into one another.

What in the hell is going on with Kelis? I know she had a baby with Nas and they got divorced but she’s gone really crazy, I mean more than the screaming, “I hate you so much right now” level of crazy we’ve come to expect. The only thing that is missing from her outfit from the Data Awards in LA (which – why is Kelis there?) is that her skin isn’t blue. (Side Note: for a tutorial, watch this.)

Back to Kelis – Lady, you are 30 years old. Get it together. And can we give the McQueen crab claw shoes a rest? It’s so 10 minutes ago – I saw in my best Ana Wintour voice, behind my blueblockers.

And as for this new album you got coming together, Flesh Tones, due in April…well, we’ll see how I feel about you doing this obscure dance music. The list of producers thus far? David Guetta, Will.I.Am, Boys Noises, Diplo and Switch, and Free School. Fine. Whatever. Give it a shot. Couldn’t hurt because aside from your debut, your albums have been worth shit. Sorry boo.

I Blame Coco is one of those instances that if it hadn’t been for that person featured on her single, I never would have even paid attention. However at the moment we are in a Robyn drought and any morsel that comes my way I eat up. This is how it came to be that I was introduced to I Blame Coco whose debut single “Caesar” features none other than Swedish pop sensation Robyn.

I Blame Coco is also an actress and model. Most interestingly she is the daughter of Sting. All of these things I culled from Wikipedia, and quite frankly at the moment there’s just not information about this artist, if you poke around the internet you’ll find a few other tracks from her including “Eighteen with a Bullet” and a self titled track “I Blame Coco”.

She’s new to the scene and I’m intrigued and what else she has in store for us. Check out the video below of her first single “Caesar” which also features Robyn. The video reminds me of the movie from a few years back called “Tooth and Nail” for the 7 people out there who actually watched it. Also look for a remix from Diplo below that. Diplo provides a stripped down mix with an almost trip-hop beat.
