Sophie Ellis-Bextor Changes Third Single

Posted by Shan on June 7th, 2010 | No Comments

Sophie, who is notorious for making poor choices when it comes to her music career has opted to change her third single from her upcoming album Straight to the Heart (which if you recall also started with a different name) to a song called Not Giving Up which is a collaboration with Armin van Buuren.

Although we haven’t heard this song yet, we can only assume that this is the first wise choice she has made in awhile. The original track which to be released was Off & On which was destined to completely bomb in the charts. Not only had the track already been recorded by Roisin Murphy, but Sophie’s version has been floating around online for nearly TWO years, everyone who wanted to hear it, has heard it and since moved since about February of 2009.

When asked by Digital Spy about her feelings on Bittersweet only reaching 25 on the UK charts, she had this to say,

You know what, I’m totally at peace with it. I still love the song. This might sound like something you only say after something hasn’t done fantastically, but I can honestly say with my hand on my heart that I’ve had a long career and I don’t get bogged down with that kind of thing.

No, you’re right. It is something someone says after their single tanked.

Sophie gets all musically inclined

Here’s what I love about the UK/Brits: they go on telly (you like?) to discuss their song and album. I don’t think we do that much in this country. I feel it’s all a bit pretentious and tries to be too intellectual for songs that are produced by Freemasons. Blerg.

Watch an interview for a bunch of British speak and an interview that gives a little too much musical credit that you probably can’t understand and catch some great acoustic versions of Bittersweet and Heartbreak Make Me a Dancer. Actually makes them poignant to a degree.

Fresh Tidbits

In lieu of trying to make a post for each of these items, here’s a quick rundown of some interesting news:

  • Elle magazine is featuring it’s first “high concept art” cover with Kylie Minogue for June 2010 (read as: “it’s just blurry, and we’re paying for it to be blurry”)
  • Bionic, the much anticipated album from Lady Gaga Christina Aguilera features four songs by Sia, and are described by the singer as the heart of the album. Full tracklisting here, and it appears that Goldfrapp song is appearing. Really? Then you should have released on of those versus this craptastic song. (I mean, I expect this from Dannii…)
  • Speaking of the other pregnant Minogue, according to her Twitter, she’s been recording music but has no record deal. Color me surprised, after this.
  • Amy Winehouse buzz is picking back up saying she is back in the studio with Mark Ronson. I dunno, she feels irrelevant anymore.
  • Tons of songs from Kelis’ upcoming album Fleshtone have been leaked on to the interwebz, the latest being Home
  • Sophie Ellis Bextor describes each track on her upcoming album Straight to The Heart
  • Tracey Thorn unveiled another song from her new album on Stereogum called Why Does the Wind. The album Love and Its Opposite is released on 5/18.
  • Johnny Weir is making music? Oh hell.
  • Pixie Lott reported in on Twitter this week that she was in LA filming a video for the single Turn It Up. Um, I thought you were working on a new album?
  • STFU about a Britney Glee episode already!
  • Janelle Monae unveiled a trailer for her new album The ArchAndroid
  • And a bit of Gaga for you…from MAC Viva Glam.

Video: Junior Caldera feat. Sophie Ellis-Bextor – Can’t Fight This Feeling

Shew! We got Sophie videos coming out of the woodwork this week! This is the new one for the club banger Can’t Fight This Feeling which is actually from Junior’s album Debut which was release last year.

The video again isn’t much to write home about but I am enjoying this track far more than Bittersweet. I wish this had been the lead single from the album rather than another Freemason’s stamped out track. But I digress.

Sophie is lookin’ good in this video, even if she does look a bit like Dannii Minogue!

There are also some great mixes out there of this song that you should definitely check out if you have the chance, including the mixes by Junior himself and by Mischa Daniels.

For what it’s worth, here’s your first look at the video. Hopefully we’ll have some better quality soon.

It’s pretty in all the right ways, and the paint splash parts are cool. But, Sophie singing with a half dozen female back up dancers and some fancy editing, we’ve seen (and heard) it before. (And before, and before.)

At least she’s not running around Venice, right? Oh wait…

Bad things happen on dancefloors

I’ve come to realize that going onto a dancefloor is taking your life into your own hands. I submit the following evidence:

“Straight to the Heart” For Now

Posted by Shan on March 19th, 2010 | 1 Comment

In the same vein of every other choice Sophie Ellis-Bextor has ever made with her releases she pulled the original title of her album Make A Scene and has now announced the new title is Straight to the Heart. I imagine she’ll eventually follow up by releasing every song that shouldn’t be, as a single.

If you’re like us, we don’t like it. Oh and we don’t really like Bittersweet either. It’s about as exciting as Heartbreak (Make Me A Dancer), Freemason’s follow a very set pattern with their music and Bittersweet just isn’t exciting. Our excitement for this release continues to wane. The fans got themselves wet over this release before even hearing it and it simply does not live up to the faux-hype.
